In Hot Pies, Brett dramatises a selection of Australian poetry, from traditional bush poetry to contemporary. Yet, the show is as much about storytelling as it is poetry.
The show begins with a story of why poetry, story and song are important to Brett, connecting the age-old practice of storytelling to audiences of the 21st century.
Having grown up with parents and grandparents from the pre-TV generations, Brett illustrates how story is the common thread that has connected us through generations, from the days of radio to the age of the internet.
Using vaudeville through to naturalism, along with music to explore life in its richness of emotion - joy, despair and laughter - Brett demonstrates how story connects us and creates a sense of culture, belonging and identity.
The selected poems show the diversity of Australian identity, its multicultural breadth, and demonstrate how language is used to communicate ideas and experiences.
